Zach LaVine contract, explained: Everything to know about Kings star’s age, current deal following Bulls trade

The 2024-25 NBA season has been largely defined by surprising trades. From the Timberwolves’ decision to move on from Karl-Anthony Towns, to the Knicks surrendering an armada of first-round picks to bring Mikal Bridges into the fold, to the Lakers and Mavericks’ swap of Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis, confusion has reigned supreme across NBA circles as of late.

The Kings’ move to part ways with De’Aaron Fox did not come as any great shock to those keeping tabs on the team. Fox formally handed in a trade request last month, a telltale sign that he wanted out. On Sunday, Sacramento granted his wish, sending him to his rumored desired destination, the Spurs, to partner with their harrowing do-it-all big, Victor Wembanyama.

What was surprising was the return the Kings sought after. Instead of embracing the rebuild, Sacramento added another formidable piece to its puzzle, landing Bulls standout Zach LaVine.

LaVine joins a roster that is captivating, if nothing else, linking up with perennial All-Star Domantas Sabonis and his former teammate, DeMar DeRozan, in the hopes of pushing the Kings further into the playoff picture.

It’s a calculated risk, to be fair. Sacramento doesn’t look too primed to achieve postseason success, particularly in the short term.

Yet, LaVine is headed there, hoping to make a mark — and perhaps let the purple beam soar once more.

With that, here’s a look at everything you need to know about LaVine, including his age, contract details, and statistical profile.

MORE FOX-LaVINE TRADE:

Zach LaVine age

LaVine is 29. He’ll turn 30 on March 10.

LaVine has enjoyed a long and prosperous career thus far, overcoming early wobbles to become one of the league’s most efficient players at his position. At his best, LaVine was arguably the league’s greatest leaper. And although some of his athleticism waned after he tore his ACL in 2016, LaVine has continued to add different elements to his offensive repertoire.

With an effective field goal rate of 60.7 percent, LaVine ranks fourth among guards. The three players ranked above him — Christian Braun, Payton Pritchard, and Ty Jerome — all don’t take nearly as many shots as LaVine, further underscoring his proficiency as a shot-making hub.

Unsurprisingly, LaVine has received honors for that reputation. He has two All-Star appearances to his name, being named one of the Eastern Conference’s elite in 2021 and 2022. Couple that with his two Slam Dunk Championship titles, and it’s clear LaVine has done well for himself in his first 11 years in the league.

Zach LaVine contract details

LaVine inked a five-year, $215 million extension with the Bulls ahead of the 2022-23 season. The contract, which shelled out an average annual value (AAV) of approximately $43 million,  spans until the end of the 2026-27 season, although LaVine can opt out of the deal as soon as 2026.

LaVine’s contract makes him the joint 17th highest-paid player in basketball alongside Luka Doncic (Lakers) and Trae Young (Hawks).

Assuming LaVine is able to remain healthy and keep producing at a similar level, he figures to receive one more fairly sizable contract before the end of his career.
