The Chicago Cubs have made some very important moves. Their biggest moves were the trades to acquire Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly from the Houston Astros.
They finally have a star to build around in Tucker, and Pressly can serve as the team’s closer in 2025.
But the Cubs have also been linked to third baseman and two-time All-Star Alex Bregman, who was teammates with both Tucker and Pressly last year.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post stated that the Astros connections could be the key to the Cubs potentially signing Bregman.
“There is an allure to the Cubs. We just his great friend Ryan Pressly leave the Astros to go to the Cubs,” Heyman said. “There are two Astros now on the Cubs. The Cubs are an interesting team.”
Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBI and also posted a 4.1 WAR in 2024 with the Astros. Adding him would give Chicago yet another star to build around and could also give them the inside track to win the National League Central.
The NL Central is a relatively weak division, and the Cubs have made the most noise out of all five teams, so they could be considered the favorites as of now, but adding Bregman might put them over the top and allow them to drop the hammer on the other teams.
It will be interesting to see if the Astros connections will be enough for Bregman to skip town and go to the North Siders.
