The New York Mets still do not know if Pete Alonso will be playing first base for them in 2025. He could sign elsewhere, leaving the Mets scrambling to replace him.
The likeliest scenario if Alonso leaves is that Mark Vientos will play first base and Brett Baty will start as the team’s third baseman. However, while envisioning the Mets’ “dream lineup” if Alonso leaves, FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggested the Mets would make a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
“Toronto clearly wants to remain aggressive after signing Anthony Santander, but Guerrero is about to enter the final year of his contract without an extension,” wrote Kline. “Should a deal not materialize last second, it’s hard to justify keeping him around. The Blue Jays really stand no chance against the open market, unless Guerrero’s affection for Toronto is even stronger than we realize. The Mets have been linked to the 25-year-old All-Star several times. The Mets also have the financial wherewithal to re-sign Guerrero when the bidding starts.”
If Guerrero does not sign an extension in the coming weeks he will become a free agent after the season. Surely the Mets will be involved in his sweepstakes. They have the money and can present the prospect of playing with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor. If Alonso leaves, the Mets could forgo the free agency and simply make a blockbuster trade to land Guerrero. A year in Queens could give them a leg up if they can’t extend him and he does indeed hit the open market. Spotrac projects Guerrero to sign a 12-year, $427 million deal.
In Kline’s projected lineup, Guerrero would be hitting behind Soto and playing first base. That would leave Vientos at third base and Baty on the bench.
