Cardinals urged to reunite with to $100 million World Series champion

The St. Louis Cardinals have been incredibly quiet this winter. No moves have been made that directly affect the Major League roster.

While they could be trading players away and setting themselves up for a much-needed rebuild, they have chosen to hold firm.

Their goal has been to trade Nolan Arenado, but they haven’t found a taker for him. If they can’t trade him, they likely will stand as is, but should instead look for ways to improve the roster.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of the team reuniting with Jack Flaherty after his resurgent 2024 season.

“If that Arenado trade doesn’t come together post haste, maybe put off the future for now and embrace a blast from the past in the form of Jack Flaherty? And hope that youngsters Michael Siani, Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker are actually productive in the outfield this year?” Miller wrote.

Flaherty went 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts last year. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers and later traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Southern California native also helped the Dodgers win their second World Series title in five years.

The 29-year-old spent the first seven years of his career with St. Louis. He was in the conversation for the National League Cy Young award in 2019 and was in their rotation until he was traded at the 2023 deadline to the Baltimore Orioles.

In all likelihood, the Cardinals won’t pursue a reunion with Flaherty, but it would be a smart move by the front office if they can’t move Arenado.

We’ll see where Flaherty ends up.
