The New England Patriots have changed over most of their coaching staff this offseason after finishing with a 4-13 record for the second season in a row.
At the top, New England will now have another one of their former linebackers, Mike Vrabel, running the show with a mix of veteran and young coaches around him to help the team achieve their ultimate goals.
While Vrabel isn’t an offensive coach, he’ll still have to work closely with former 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye, as he leads the unit for his first full season. They may not have worked together before, but Vrabel has seen some things in his quarterback that he likes.
“He’s exciting, talented, ready to learn and ready to continue to develop,” Vrabel said (via. WBZ). “He’s athletic and mobile, has the ability to make throws to all part of the field with arm talent… There will be some new terminology and some carryover from what he’s had. I know that he’s ready to learn and is excited. We welcome that and want him to lead our football team.”
As a rookie, Maye appeared in 13 games and started 12 after Jacoby Brissett began the year as the team’s starting quarterback. The 22-year-old went on to complete 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also ran for 421 yards and two more scores on 7.8 yards per attempt.
New England’s offense has a long way to go, but Vrabel seems to see what everyone else does – Maye’s potential.
