Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Zverev prediction
There is no doubt Sinner is entering the final with the better exposed form.
Despite having a few issues with sickness and cramp, the Italian superstar has defeated Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton to the loss of only one set in the previous three rounds at Melbourne Park.
That would be seriously impressive form even if he had no problems with his body.
With a possible doping suspension hanging over him, there have been question marks over whether that would affect Sinner mentally.
However, the top seed has shown no mental weakness so far, losing only two sets on his way to the final.
Zverev has also only lost two sets but has been somewhat less impressive in his route to the decider.
He somehow beat Tommy Paul in four sets in the quarter-final, despite the American serving for the opening two sets Zverev won.
The world no.2 only just managed to win the first set against a clearly injured and hampered Novak Djokovic before the Serbian legend retired.
The fact Zverev only spent just over an hour on court against Djokovic will count for something if the final becomes a battle of endurance.
Zverev has to battle his own mental demons also, having lost two grand slam finals from winning positions and suffering a litany of missed opportunities in crucial semi-finals.
Prediction: Sinner in three sets.
Sinner is simply too good and Zverev doesn’t really possess enough variety to unsettle the Italian.
For the German to have any chance, he would need Sinner to struggle physically – which is a possibility.
But opponents have been waiting for Sinner to drop off all tournament and he hasn’t.
