Man City vs. Chelsea live score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Madueke nets from Khusanov horror error

Manchester City and Chelsea face a game that could have a telling say over their top four ambitions in the Premier League this season.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea occupy fourth spot at the moment, a place and two points ahead of reigning champions City.

That was the Blues’ first win in six Premier League games, a slump that effectively dropped them out of the title race.

City’s ambitions for the current campaign had been scaled back before then and a six-match unbeaten run across all competitions ground to a halt in midweek when they surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain.

Man City vs. Chelsea live updates, highlights, and commentary

33 mins: Foden back for some of the grubby stuff in his own half and shoves Caicedo over.

32 mins: Marmoush launches a nice cross towards Foden at the far post. A bit too much on it and the unmarked England star heads over.

31 mins: Marmoush was on his bike there but Akanji opted against the long ball and the City fans grumble. He finds Kovacic, who wins a free-kick that Caicedo really didn’t need to give away.

30 mins: Jackson in on goal and Ederson saves! In reality he was offside, which is almost impressive given the disarray of City’s defensive line.

28 mins: Ederson hares out to make a decent headed clearance but he’s needed again soon after as Palmer’s deflected strike rides up nicely into the City keeper’s gloves.

26 mins: Madueke into the box and to the byline past Gvardiol. Akanji is there to clear.

25 mins: Sanchez gets himself booked for timewasting, which is an absurd thing to do. Surely Chelsea want to keep trying to get at City in this state.

24 minsGvardiol should score! A short corner between Silva and Foden results in the latter having to make two 50-50 challenges. City manage to keep the attack alive an Silva’s cross finds Gvardiol at the far post. The Croatia defender checks inside beautifully but fires over on his right foot.

23 mins: Marmoush’s effort is tame and into the wall. The ball breaks to Khusanov, who catches a low drive sweetly, only to see it blocked. That would have been some turnaround!

22 mins: James brings down Marmoush on the edge of the box, seemingly oblivious to all those Eintracht Franfurt free-kick compilations on YouTube.

21 mins: City reduced to trying to play on and engineer fast breaks, which is a wild predicament for a Guardiola team to be in. Anyway, here’s one as Gvardiol drives across goal just beyond a sliding Marmoush. He was probably offside but there’s a warning for Chelsea.

15 mins: Akanji lumps a dreadful ball crossfield and Sancho has a run at Khusanov, who he breezes past. The Swiss international at least gets back to clear the cross.

10 mins: FODEN HITS THE POST! City scrambling to keep their heads above water here but they’re almost level as Foden pirouettes brilliant on the edge of the box and thunders a strike against the post. Sanchez didn’t smell it.

9 mins: Should be 2-0 to Chelsea! Khusanov, who is beyond scrambled here, plays Palmer onside and he’s through on goal. He passes to Jackson, but it’s overhit. The striker pulls the ball back for Sancho and Ederson saves well.

6 mins: Foden coming deep to help City in central areas, where they’ve been so outgunned lately, but he’s just given away a dicey pass in his own half.

4 mins: Chelsea surge at City again. Khusanov flies into a rash challenge and is booked. A particularly tough baptism for the Uzbekistan defender so far. James hammers the free-kick high and wide.

3 minsGOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! Noni Madueke!!!!!

A NIGHTMARE START FOR ABDUKODIR KHUSANOV! City’s new signing stoops to head back to Ederson, gets in all wrong and Jackson pounces to give Madueke a tap-in.

2 minsMarmoush in on goal already! He fires straight at Sanchez and then the flag goes up. But it looked tight

Kickoff: 1st Half

We’re underway. It looks like Marmoush operating off the left of a front three as expect4ed.

1 mins before kickoff: The stadium has just observed a moment’s applause for former City captain and manager Tony Book, who died earlier this month.

5 mins before kickoff: We’ve had a lights show and a drum-and-bass version of Wonderwall before an operatic take on Blue Moon. Not necessarily treatments required for two fine pieces of music but it’s all in the service of razzamatazz. Here come the teams!

20 mins before kickoff: As will be the case for some time at this fixture, it’ll be all eyes on Cole Palmer. The one who got away for Manchester City. Not that anyone was complaining when they pouched £42.5m for the academy graduate in August 2023. In fact, the general consensus was Chelsea might have been ripped off. Palmer has, of course, been a revelation ever since. The path to first-team football with treble-winning City was never going to be straightforward but if you look at their squad today, you’ll find an aging Kevin De Bruyne on the bench, How Guardiola would love a midfield creative of Palmer’s quality operating alongside fellow Mancunian Phil Foden.

40 mins before kickoff: Those debuts for Khusanov and Marmoush could help to stoke up a potentially apprehensive home crowd. The Sporting News has had a dig into both new City signings and what options they might give Guardiola. Have look below for some pre-match reaching.

1 hour before kickoff: Here’s how Chelsea line up, with Enzo Fernandez fit to start. Levi Colwill returns to partner Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back. Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho each start against their former club, with another former City academy graduate Tosin Adarabioyo among the substitutes.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in and there are City debuts for new signing Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush from kickoff as Pep Guardiola shakes things up. A starting midfield three of Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan highlights how there is still probably work to be done before the transfer deadline. Another new arrival, Brazilian teenager Vitor Reis, is on the bench.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: City claimed an authoritative 2-0 win at Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season, a win they managed without Rodri. An awful look of water has passed under the bridge since then and Pep Guardiola’s side are out of the title race and two points behind the team coached by his former assistant Enzo Maresca in the final automatic Champions League qualification spot. Guardiola’s men face a must-win game against Brugge in that competition on Wednesday before travelling to Arsenal. It could be a season-defining week for the reigning champions.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester City vs. Chelsea. Two talented but flawed sides who each need the win to aid their top-four push. Could be an absolute barnburner.

Man City vs. Chelsea lineups, team news

City’s latest round of injuries mean a couple of Guardiola’s new signings are thrust straight into action.

Nathan Ake did not travel to Paris and Ruben Dias told his boss he could not continue at half-time. The fact Rico Lewis rather than John Stones replaced the Portugal centre-back indicates the latter is not fit enough to start.

As a result Abdukodir Khusanov starts at centre-back next to Manuel Akanji and Vitor Reis is alongside Stones on the bench,.

At the other end of the field, Jeremy Doku remains sidelined and Omar Marmoush comes straight in following his £59m move from Eintracht Frankfurt, preferred to benched duo Savinho and Jack Grealish on the left wing.

Man City (4-3-3, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Nunes, Khusanov, Akanji, Gvardiol— Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan — Foden, Haaland, Marmoush.

Man City subs: Ortega (GK), Stones, Grealish, De Bruyne. Reis, Savinho, O’Reilly, Lewis, McAtee.

Chelsea head coach Maresca has Enzo Fernandez available once again to partner Moises Caicedo in midfield, with Romeo Lavi still sidelined for the game against his former club.

Nevertheless, fellow City academy graduates Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho start and Tosin Adarabioyo drops to the bench to accommodate Levi Colwill.

Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Omari Kellyman remain sidelined, while Mykhailo Mudryk is still suspended following his adverse finding in a doping test last month.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1, right to left): Sanchez (GK) — James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella —Caicedo, Fernandez — Madueke, Palmer, Sancho — Jackson.

Chelsea subs: Jorgensen (GK), Disasi, Adarabioyo, Neto, Nkunku, Dewsbury-Hall, Gusto, Acheampong, Guiu.
