When is the last time Commanders went to a Super Bowl? History of Washington’s big game appearances

The Washington Commanders are somewhere they have not been since 1992.

Rookie sensation Jayden Daniels has led the No. 6 seed Commanders to back-to-back road upsets and will face division rival Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship. Washington already took down the No. 1 seed Detroit Lions but will be on the road again to face the No. 2 seed. Can Daniels keep Washington’s Cinderella run going and take the Commanders to the Super Bowl?

If so, it would be Washington’s first championship game appearance in quite some time. Let’s look back at Washington’s big game appearances.

Commanders’ Super Bowl history

When was the last time the Commanders went to the Super Bowl?

Washington’s wild-card win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers marked the team’s first playoff win since 2005. Prior to that, they had last made the divisional round in 1999 and 1993 before that.

In 1992, however, Washington advanced all the way to Super Bowl 26. Then the Washington Redskins, the team faced off against the Buffalo Bills.

Led by head coach Joe Gibbs and quarterback Mark Rypien, Washington, having finished 14-2 in the regular season, defeated the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round 24-7 and crushed the Lions 41-10 in the conference championship.

At the end of the first half of Super Bowl 26, Washington led 17-0. Buffalo, playing in its second consecutive Super Bowl, turned the ball over five times, and Washington led the whole game, securing its third Lombardi Trophy.

Rypien won the Super Bowl MVP after compiling 292 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-33 passing.

Four years earlier, Washington faced the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 22. Gibbs was still head coach, but Rypien had not yet entered the fold. Instead, it was Doug Williams who threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns on 18-of-29 passing en route to a 42-10 shellacking and Super Bowl MVP honors.

Yet, that was not Washington’s first Super Bowl victory. In 1983, the team pulled off a shocking upset as Gibbs and quarterback Joe Theismann defeated Don Shula and the Miami Dolphins 27-17. Down 17-10 at halftime, Washington held Miami to 176 total yards and zero second-half points.

John Riggins became the second running back to ever win Super Bowl MVP, rushing for 166 yards and the go-ahead touchdown.

Washington has appeared in two other Super Bowls, losing in 1984 and 1973. They also won NFL Championships in 1937 and 1942.
