The Minnesota Timberwolves are now only a game above .500 after their 108-106 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Minnesota is the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference, and while that puts them in a Play-In Tournament spot, they are striving for more.
As a team that went 56-26 last year, they have work to do.
The Timberwolves are a different team from last season as a trade involving Karl-Anthony Towns was one of the biggest moves of the offseason. They brought in Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. And as Minnesota tries to climb the Western Conference, another deal could be in the works. They may not need a blockbuster trade, but bringing in a young guard could shake things up. Could they land Collin Sexton?
Sexton is averaging 18.3 points and 3.9 assists for the Utah Jazz. This is his third season in Utah, as he was a part of the deal that sent Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite being Utah’s second-leading scorer, Sexton’s name comes up in trade rumors. He could be a guy that a number of teams go after, and FanSided predicted him as a realistic target for Minnesota.
The 26-year-old guard is making $18.4 million this season and has another year left on his contract. With their veteran point guard Mike Conley getting older and DiVincenzo out with a toe injury, Minnesota could use someone like Sexton. Minnesota is a second apron team, so acquiring him will take some maneuvering. Regardless of what they choose to do, such as getting a third team involved, Conley or DiVincenzo could be included.
Sexton is known for his toughness and his scoring ability. Those qualities also describe his fellow Georgia native Anthony Edwards. The pairing of him and Edwards could give Minnesota a spark and help them climb the conference. It is something they should at least explore.
