The New York Yankees have made improvements to their roster after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets. However, the team could target another infielder to solidify their group.
The Yankees let Gleyber Torres walk in free agency and could be looking for an upgrade at second base instead of rolling with D.J. LeMahieu. FanSided’s Jacob Mountz suggested that the Yankees could target Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Geraldo Perdomo to solidify their infield.
“As for the Yankees, Geraldo Perdomo carries some promise. Perdomo slashed .273/.344/.374/.718 with three home runs in 337 at-bats during an injury-shortened 2024,” wrote Mountz. “He is a plus defender on the infield and has experience at shortstop, third base, and second base. As a hitter, he doesn’t chase, whiff or strikeout much. He doesn’t have much power only hitting 14 home runs in his four-year career (only 31 at-bats in 2021), but his contact-hitting approach should be of interest to the Yankees.”
Perdomo was an All-Star in 2023. He could slot in as the everyday second baseman or the Yankees could explore the idea of playing him at third base and moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. Perdomo has more experience at second base. His primary position is at shortstop, but the Yankees plan to have Anthony Volpe as their everyday shortstop in 2025.
Perdomo will not be a free agent until 2028. However, he may become trade bait well before that as the Diamondbacks’ top prospect Jordan Lawlar could be ready to take over as the everyday shortstop soon. Spotrac projects Perdomo to sign a five-year, $51 million deal in free agency and the Diamondbacks could look to get a return for him before he hits the open market.
