The Milwaukee Brewers lost Willy Adames to the San Francisco Giants this offseason but have not yet made any moves to replace his production in the lineup. They could make a surprise signing before the season starts.
Alex Bregman remains unsigned and he seems to be out of the Brewers price range. However, if Bregman signs a deal like Cody Bellinger did late last offseason, he could make sense for the Brewers. Bregman and Bellinger are both represented by Scott Boras. Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy predicted that the Brewers would sign Bregman if he ends up signing a deal with multiple opt-outs.
“This would only happen in a perfect world. It isn’t likely by any means and isn’t going to happen unless something crazy happens,” wrote McAvoy. “If Bregman ends up having to settle for a short-term deal with opt-outs like what Cody Bellinger got with the Chicago Cubs last year, the Brewers would fit. They are a contender and have a need at third base. Isn’t going to happen, though.”
Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. However, as spring training inches closer a big deal seems more unlikely.
The Brewers lost a big piece when Adames signed with the Giants. Defensively, the Brewers should be fine. They will likely move Brice Turang to shortstop, the position he came up playing in the Brewers’ system. If they want to keep his Platinum Glove at second base, Joey Ortiz, also a shortstop by trade, could play shortstop. Regardless, they will still need a new starting infielder.
Bregman is a two-time All-Star, Gold Glover, Silver Slugger and World Series champion. Last season he had a .768 OPS in 145 games. He could play a big role in helping replace the offensive hole left by Adames.
