The Minnesota Timberwolves are floating right around the .500 mark a year removed from reaching the Western Conference Finals.
Due to not meeting expectations, Wolves superstar Anthony Edwards has vocalized his frustrations with the team on multiple occasions.
“The starting five, we are terrible,” Edwards said after a loss to the Golden State Warriors. “Every game, we come out just low-energy. The second group comes in and gives us energy. I would say the starting group gotta come out with more energy, like we wanna play the game of basketball, like we love the game.”
Minnesota’s front office should take this as a sign to shake things up around Edwards at the trade deadline. One route is to acquire Phoenix Suns underrated veteran guard Tyus Jones, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Wolves. The Wright Way Network predicts Minnesota will trade for Jones at February’s trade deadline.
“The Timberwolves have no true offensive identity, and they need a playmaking guard to make it happen. Conley is 37 years old, so trading for a younger guy will help fit their system better, and that is Tyus Jones,” TWSN’s Matt Shovelson wrote. “Jones is averaging 11.6 PTS and 6 AST while shooting 42.1% from three. Instead of Julius Randle and Anthony Edwards playing iso-hero ball, a dynamic point guard who is a solid playmaker would certainly help the fluidity of this offense, and make it thrive as a unit.”
While scoring is undoubtedly one of their biggest needs, Jones brings something to the table that can lead to much more scoring across the board, which is elite-level playmaking. He is averaging 6.2 assists on 1.3 turnovers in 40 appearances with the Suns this season. It is only the second year of his career, where he is recording a turnover or more per game.
