Daniil Medvedev cops monster fine after shock Australian Open loss

Daniil Medvedev has copped a pair of hefty fines following his surprise Australian Open exit.

The world No. 5 was bundled out in the second round by qualifier Learner Tien – arguably the biggest upset of the tournament thus far.

To add insult to injury, Medvedev will lose the bulk of his prize money after receiving financial penalties for his behaviour across his opening two matches.

During his gritty five-set comeback win against wildcard Kasidit Samrej in the first round, the Russian smashed a net camera and broke his racquet in frustration.

Then, in the second round, the 28-year-old threw his racquet at advertisement boards before skipping the early-morning post-match media conference.

Medvedev has been issued two fines totalling US$76,000 (approx. AU$123,000) for the incidents.

This will eat into most of his AU$200,000 in prize money, which he was awarded following his premature exit.

“The camera was very, very strong, because my racquet didn’t handle the damage, but the camera did. I was very surprised,” Medvedev said after his first-round win.

“The fine is usually for breaking the racquet, and the camera is going to cost some, but I don’t think Go Pro is that expensive.”

As it turns out, it was an expensive decision.
