Any day now, the Los Angeles Dodgers will find out whether or not they get to add Roki Sasaki to their already-stacked roster.
Sasaki, the 23-year-old Japanese fireballer, must choose his first Major League Baseball team within a week, and the Dodgers are among the three known finalists for his services, alongside the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays.
The Dodgers have met with Sasaki twice, including one meeting earlier this week involving some of the players. Both of the other teams involved have had two meetings as well, and it seems as though news of a decision could break at any minute.
And while All-Star pitcher Tyler Glasnow wasn’t present in the meeting, he’s apparently been doing some of his own recruitment on the side.
“I talked to him on the phone … it was a pretty quick phone call,” Glasnow said Thursday in an appearance on Foul Territory.
“I sent him a thing and was like, ‘I haven’t played for the other two organizations. But if one of your main goals is to become the best pitcher you can possibly be, like development-wise and everything, scouting report-wise and like all that stuff, I said, ‘This is the place for you.’”
Glasnow, 31, is entering the second season of a five-year, $136.5 million contract that includes a club option for 2028. In other words, he’ll be around a while, and since they share an agent, Sasaki could look to the righty for advice about on-field and off-field parts of the job.
Getting a pitcher of Sasaki’s immense talents is a huge plus, but getting him on a minor-league contract, which he will have to accept because he is under 25, is almost a cheat code.
If anything Glasnow said helps sway Sasaki to don Dodger blue this year, they’ll owe him a tremendous debt.
