‘Unlock the team’s potential’ — Timberwolves predicted to acquire $10 million veteran desperate for a ring

The Minnesota Timberwolves are working their way back into the playoff picture. They had a rocky start early on as they tried to reach .500 and found themselves towards the bottom of the Western Conference. Now, Minnesota is the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, which at least puts them in the Play-In Tournament race.

Minnesota is led by their star Anthony Edwards. He is averaging 25.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.3 steals. Edwards and his supporting cast look different this year, with players like Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo in the mix instead of Karl-Anthony Towns. And although this group is solid, Minnesota could use some changes if they want to compete like last season.

The upcoming trade deadline is the perfect opportunity. One player the Timberwolves should consider is a veteran point guard on a mediocre team. They could explore a trade for Chris Paul.

ClutchPoints listed Paul as one of the top trade targets Minnesota could pursue. Paul is averaging 9.7 points, 8.4 assists, and 4.3 rebounds. The 39-year-old guard is on a young Spurs team, and as he nears the end of his career, joining a team like the Timberwolves puts him in a better position to win.

Paul is earning $10.5 million this season and is an unrestricted free agent this summer. Minnesota is a second apron team, so getting him would require moving someone like DiVincenzo, who plays point guard for the Timberwolves at this time. Minnesota made changes as he moved to the starting spot in place of Mike Conley. The 26-year-old is making $11.4 million this season. DiVincenzo and some draft picks for a rebuilding team is reasonable.

The Timberwolves could be active during the deadline. Their second apron status makes it challenging, but getting a deal for someone like Paul is worth it. If the opportunity does come along, they should take it.
