Arsenal set to sign Martin Zubimendi in huge transfer boost to Mikel Arteta

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Martin Zubimendi, according to reports.

Notorious transfer guru Fabrizio Romano and the Daily Mail are reporting that the Gunners have struck a deal for the midfielder, who will join in the summer. Arsenal have reportedly triggered the €60m (£50m/$61.5m) release clause in Zubimendi’s contract.

The 25-year-old, who has been heavily linked with Liverpool in the past, becomes the second Spanish midfielder in quick succession to join Mikel Arteta’s outfit.

In the summer of 2024 it was Mikel Merino who swapped Real Sociedad for the north London side and now it seems Zubimendi will make the same move.

Negotiations are ongoing regarding personal terms, but the deal would come as a major boost for Arsenal, adding further depth to Arteta’s midfield. As well as Merino, Zubimendi will vie with Declan Rice, Thomas Partey and others in the Gunners engine room.

The only worry for Arsenal fans would be that they are clearly in need of January additions in a different positions.

Injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus have left Arteta’s men short of attacking options, which has shown in recent cup defeats at the hands of Newcastle and Manchester United. Arsenal looked blunt up top in both encounters at the Emirates.

They have been linked with strikers Alexander Isak, Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyökeres, but it remains to be seen whether any of those moves will materialise.
