The Dallas Mavericks will be without their star player for a while, and they can use some offense in his absence. Luka Doncic suffered an injury in the Mavs’ Christmas game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Kyrie Irving has put up big numbers in Doncic’s absence.
But he cannot do it all by himself. Should the Mavericks turn to a sought-after sharpshooter to spark their offense?
One player that has been the subject of trade rumors is Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson. Johnson is a key player for Brooklyn, as he is their second leading scorer. He is averaging 19.1 points and 4.3 rebounds on 48.8% shooting. The 29-year-old forward is also living up to his sharpshooter title as he is shooting 42.9% from three-point range.
When it comes to Johnson, teams like the Golden State Warriors, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Cleveland Cavaliers and more are mentioned as potential destinations. The Mavs can swoop in and take the Nets forward from those teams.
If Brooklyn does trade him, they are looking towards the future. Marc Stein discussed Johnson and what the Nets are looking for in an article on The Stein Line.
“The Nets are now said to be seeking multiple first-round picks from teams interested in trading for sharpshooter Cam Johnson. Can they really expect to get more than one first-rounder for Johnson after the deals just witnessed for Schröder and Finney-Smith?” Stein said.
Brooklyn has been active in trades recently. They moved Dennis Schröder in a deal with the Warriors and more recently, they moved another sought-after trade target in Dorian Finney-Smith. They traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers for D’Angelo Russell.
The Nets are willing to move players and the Mavericks can get in on the action. As a top 10 three-point shooting team, Johnson will fit right in.
