The New York Yankees roster will look very different in 2025. They lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets and have brought in many new pieces. They could also be moving on from one of their All-Star infielders.
YES Network’s Jack Curry noted that he doesn’t expect Gleyber Torres to be back with the team in 2025. Torres is currently a free agent and has been with the Yankees his entire big league career.
“There’s been some rumors about Gleyber Torres, I don’t expect Gleyber Torres returning,” Curry said during an episode of Yankees Hot Stove.
The Yankees have added Paul Goldschmidt to play first base, but that may not be the only infield change. They are involved in the third base market. The addition of a third baseman would move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. Their search for a third baseman does not bode well for Torres’ chances.
Torres had a subpar season in 2024. He had 15 home runs. He had just a .257 batting average. However, he can still be valuable for a different team as he still posted an OPS+ over 100. He has 138 career home runs and would be a cheap addition. Torres started his career off with consecutive All-Star selections. Spotrac projects Torres to sign a three-year, $20 million deal in free agency.
Torres has played 88 games for the Yankees since his debut in 2018. Now that they are not responsible for paying Soto, the Yankees have money to spend. They’ve already upgraded their starting rotation, bullpen, infield, and outfield. They could really put a stamp on the offseason by moving Chisholm to second base and replacing Torres.
