Canada has vengeance on its mind entering the 2025 World Juniors.
Last year did not go as planned for the Canadians at the IIHF U20 hockey tournament. Led by Macklin Celebrini, the team finished second in group play, but the Canadians stumbled in the first round of the knockout stage, losing to Czechia to miss out on the podium. It marked the first time since 2019 that Canada left the World Juniors without a medal.
However, the beauty of the World Juniors is that there is constant turnover year over year, as certain players age out and new talent becomes available. For Canada in 2025, it’s a new look to the group.
Leading the way for the Canadians this year are a number of first-round picks, including Easton Cowan (Maple Leafs), Brayden Yager (Jets), Calum Ritchie (Avalanche), Berkly Catton (Kraken) and Sam Dickinson (Sharks). In addition, Matthew Schaefer and Porter Martone are two 2025 NHL Draft prospects who made Team Canada, and the pair could very well end up being top-five selections.
Arguably the biggest name to look out for is Gavin McKenna, the 17-year-old cousin of Canadian sensation Connor Bedard. He’s already the leading candidate to go first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft and received the nod to represent Canada as one of the youngest players at the tournament.
