The Houston Astros will likely lose third baseman Alex Bregman. They are reportedly unwilling to give him a long-term contract, which likely spells the end of his time in Houston.
Instead, they will have Isaac Paredes as their new third baseman in 2025, or potentially another addition from the outside.
Houston has fortunately prepared for this scenario, and in their preparations for 2025, they signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal.
Bregman on the other hand, will be elsewhere. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com believes the Boston Red Sox could be the favorites to land him.
“The two teams I would look at are the Red Sox and the Tigers,” Feinsand said on MLB Network.
If Boston signs Bregman, they will likely move Rafael Devers off of third base and either make him their designated hitter or put him at first base over Triston Casas.
While losing Bregman is going to be a tough pill to swallow for the Astros and their fans after so many great years, the Astros have a solid plan in place thanks to the Walker signing. They got a good haul in exchange for Kyle Tucker and Walker should be able to fill the void left by Bregman quite well.
Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBI in what is likely his last year in Houston. He helped take the Astros to the World Series four times from 2017-22, and Houston won two World Series rings during that span.
He’ll be remembered fondly in Houston, but his days as an Astro are likely over.
