The Toronto Blue Jays tried to sign Juan Soto but failed this offseason. They swung a trade for Andrés Giménez but could add another All-Star via trade before Opening Day.
FanSided’s Mark Powell proposed a trade that would bring Ryan Helsley to the Blue Jays from the St. Louis Cardinals. Helsley will be a free agent following the 2024 season and the Cardinals seem to be rebuilding.
“The Blue Jays are one of several teams interested in St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, though he will not come cheap,” wrote Powell. “Toronto isn’t in desperate need of bullpen help, but their decision to non-tender Jordan Romano could come back to haunt them if they aren’t able to land Helsey. The Blue Jays currently feature Chad Green and Yimi Garcia in late-inning roles, which leaves a lot to be desired.”
Helsely led Major League Baseball in saves last season. He had a 2.04 ERA and 79 strikeouts last season. He had a career-best 3.0 WAR. Spotrac projects Helsley to sign a six-year, $81 million deal in free agency.
The Blue Jays could solidify the backend of their bullpen by adding Helsley. The team has not had much success in landing free agents, but just like the trade for Giménez, they could bring in an All-Star through trade. Helsley is a two-time All-Star and won the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award in 2024.
