The New York Yankees appear to be parting ways with a two-time All-Star this offseason.
After spending the first seven seasons of his career in pinstripes, second baseman Gleyber Torres is likely headed for a new team in free agency.
The 27-year-old slugger is coming off a turbulent season that included two separate benchings followed by a strong end to the campaign as a reliable leadoff hitter.
In terms of where Torres might land in his post-Yankees career, Drew VonScio of Newsweek predicts the two-time All-Star would be a perfect fit for the Detroit Tigers.
“Gleyber Torres could slot right into the Tigers lineup as the everyday second baseman. He’s fresh off of a .257 season with 15 home runs and 63 RBI. Torres provides a solid balance of pop and contact in a lineup,” VonScio wrote.
It has been a quiet offseason for Torres and his market in free agency. After posting a 101 OPS+ during the 2024 season, Torres is projected to sign a $21 million deal over three years, according to Spotrac.
The Yankees seemingly had Torres’ replacement lined up in the form of prospect Caleb Durbin, but he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers as a part of the Devin Williams trade.
The Yankees currently don’t have a starting second baseman. They could move Jazz Chisholm over there if they sign or trade for a third baseman like Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado. They could also keep Chisholm on the hot corner and turn to a different option at second base.
Either way, it seems Torres’ time with the Yankees has come to an end, and it will be interesting to see where he lands.
