Yankees pursuing reunion with breakout relief pitcher in free agency

Despite a busy offseason, the New York Yankees still have a handful of boxes to check before the 2025 season arrives.

While they’ve added some big pieces to address needs at center field, first base and the back end of the bullpen, they are still in the market to add another infielder and potentially a left fielder.

The additions of elite closer Devin Williams and a high-upside strikeout arm in Fernando Cruz — both via trades — have given the Yankees some stability in the bullpen.

Still, the Bronx Bombers have a void to fill on the other side of the pen and are looking to add a left-handed reliever in free agency.

Among the potential additions the Yankees are interested in is breakout lefty Tim Hill, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

“The Yankees also brought back uber talented Jonathan Loaisiga and added strikeout artist Fernando Cruz in a trade for pitch-gaming savant Jose Trevino, bolstering their strong bullpen — though they still need a lefty (they’re pursuing old friend Tim Hill and others),” Heyman wrote.

Hill was a breakout star for the Yankees during the 2024 season, and he’s a big reason why they were able to reach the World Series for the first time in 15 years.

Banking on him posting a 2.05 ERA again would be short-sighted, but it’s clear he was able to make some significant improvements under the watch of pitching coach Matt Blake.

The Yankees signed Hill on June 20 after he was released by the Chicago White Sox. Despite posting a 5.87 ERA with the White Sox and a career 4.30 ERA before joining the Yankees, Hill was dominant.

The Yankees still likely need to add two lefties to the pen and if Hill can recapture some of that magic from his breakout season, the Yankees bullpen will once again be a strength of the roster.
