Timberwolves may add 15-point-per-game, 6’3 guard via free agency

The Minnesota Timberwolves have plenty of guards on their roster, but some are inexperienced while others are aging and not meeting their expectations.

This opens the door for Minnesota’s to take a high-risk, high-reward shot at one free agent guard. Dennis Smith Jr., a former All-Rookie player who averaged 15.2 points in his first season, went unsigned this offseason. He last played for the Brooklyn Nets in 2024, where he averaged 6.6 points and 3.6 assists on 43.5% shooting.

Smith recently revealed the Wolves are one of four teams that he sees himself as the best fit with.

“I be thinking the Spurs, Minnesota, and Miami obviously, and I say them three I could come in and have the most impact,” Smith shared on The OGs Podcast with retired Miami Heat forwards Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller. “Not even on all the work I’ve been putting in all summer, but if we went just off what I was doing last year, I think I could come in and make a real contribution, or the Lakers too.”

The most appealing part of Smith’s skillset is athleticism. Pairing another high-flying guard next to superstar Anthony Edwards would not only frustrate opponents but also provide for plenty of entertainment. The 27-year-old could play a similar role to what the Timberwolves are likely envisioning rookie Terrence Shannon Jr. to become.

With the Wolves not meeting expectations thus far, it’s apparent something needs to change. While Smith would not solve all their problems, he’s a new face that could hopefully add a positive effect to the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.
