Tottenham reportedly eye ex-Premier League star to solve injury crisis

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly targeting a January move for Ben Godfrey to strengthen their defense.

The 26-year-old former Everton defender has struggled for game time since his summer transfer to Atalanta in Serie A.

With Spurs reeling from an injury crisis, manager Ange Postecoglou seems eager to bring reinforcements.

Despite their injury-hit squad, Tottenham began December with one of the best defensive records in the Premier League.

However, a crushing 6-3 loss to Liverpool highlighted their defensive vulnerabilities, with key players missing from the lineup.

Postecoglou has stood firm in his attacking philosophy but acknowledged the challenges of playing without his first-choice defenders.

Why Ben Godfrey could make a transfer move to Tottenham?

Godfrey joined Atalanta for £10 million in the summer but has struggled to break into their starting XI. So far, he has only made five substitute appearances across all competitions, often coming on in games that were already decided.

With Gian Piero Gasperini’s side competing at the top of Serie A and excelling in the Champions League, Godfrey’s lack of playing time has raised questions about his future.

A return to the Premier League could offer him the chance to regain form and consistency.

List of teams interested in Ben Godfrey transfer

Tottenham aren’t the only club interested. Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also reportedly keeping tabs on the versatile England international.

Atalanta may be reluctant to let Godfrey leave, especially with key defender Giorgio Scalvini sidelined.

However, they could be tempted by a substantial loan fee, which would allow them to sign a replacement.

For Godfrey, returning to England could be crucial for his career, as he’s made only 35 appearances since 2022.

Spurs hope that adding Godfrey to their squad will stabilize their defense and support their ambitions for the season.
