Phillies could cut ties with $136 million star after latest offseason addition

The Philadelphia Phillies had a disappointing postseason. As they look to reload before 2025, they could trade one of their starting outfielders. The team signed Max Kepler. This move could trigger a trade involving Brandon Marsh.

FanSided’s Edward Eng noted that Marsh could be dealt now that the Phillies have another outfielder. Marsh will not be a free agent until after the 2027 season.

“Last season, Marsh posted a .249 batting average with a career-high 16 home runs and 19 stolen bases for the Phillies. However, for his career, he has usually averaged just about 14 home runs and 66 RBI over a 162-game schedule pace while batting closer to the bottom of the lineup,” wrote Eng. “On the other hand, despite an injury-riddled 2024 season, Kepler has, for the most part, been an offensive force throughout his MLB career for the Minnesota Twins. He has averaged 24 home runs and 77 RBI while predominantly batting closer to the heart of the order. With both of their defensive abilities likely canceling each other out, it gives Kepler the upper hand with his greater offensive potential.”

Marsh’s overall numbers were carried by an outlier month of June. He slashed .298/.411/.426 in 15 games that month. However, the rest of the season did not play out the same. The Phillies relied on Marsh a lot in 2024, but if they want to win a championship, they may need someone who is more consistent at the plate.

Marsh came to the Phillies in the middle of the 2022 season. He has played in 268 games in his two full seasons with the Phillies. His multiple years of club control give him some more trade value. Spotrac projects him to sign an eight-year, $136 million deal when he hits free agency.
