The Boston Red Sox and MLB lost an important member of their family on Friday, as Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson passed away at 65 years old.
Henderson was a 10-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, one-time AL MVP, three-time Silver Slugger and 12-time stolen base leader in his 25 seasons in the MLB. He played for nearly one-third of the league, spending time with the Red Sox, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers
It was in his second and third stints with Oakland that he played with legendary Red Sox pitcher Dennis Eckersley, who is also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and joined the Red Sox television broadcast in 2002.
After news of Henderson’s passing, Eckersley took to social media to share his thoughts on his former teammate.
“I’m very sad about the loss of my friend, teammate and fellow Hall of Famer,” Eckersley said.”We were two Bay Area boys. I was proud to play with him. He was the greatest player I ever played with. I cherished our recent times together both in Cooperstown and at the Oakland Coliseum. My condolences to his family.”
Henderson was truly something special to watch, and when other Hall of Famers are calling someone the greatest player they ever played with, it speaks volumes.
