Liverpool manager Arne Slot has raised fresh concerns over Diogo Jota’s fitness ahead of their EFL Cup quarter-final match against Southampton.
The Portuguese forward, who recently returned from a long injury layoff, might miss out again due to discomfort.
Jota made an immediate impact on his return, scoring a crucial late equalizer in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham on Saturday.
That goal showcased his sharpness despite missing 11 games due to an abdominal issue. However, Liverpool’s hopes of giving Jota more match minutes have hit a setback, with the forward unable to train on Monday.

Arne Slot gives injury update on Diogo Jota
In his pre-match press conference, Slot revealed the situation, saying, “Diogo would have been ideal to play, but after the game, he wasn’t completely fit.” He added, “He didn’t train with us yesterday, so we’ll see if he can join us today.”
Slot admitted that Jota starting the game is unlikely, though there is still hope he could make a brief appearance off the bench.
The manager explained, “Don’t expect him to start. Hopefully, he can make some minutes, but I don’t expect him to start tomorrow.”

Jota’s ongoing injury frustrations
While Jota’s talent is undeniable, his career has been overshadowed by injuries. Since joining English football in 2017, he has consistently delivered goals, hitting double figures in six of the last seven seasons.
Unfortunately, injuries have often kept him off the pitch. Jota missed 29 games in the 2022-23 season, another 25 last year, and has already been sidelined for 13 matches this season.
At 28, the recurring setbacks remain a frustrating hurdle for both Jota and Liverpool.
