Steelers predicted to replace Russell Wilson with 175-TD Heisman candidate

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the best teams in the NFL this season, as Mike Tomlin’s squad is 10-3 and atop the AFC North through 14 weeks. Pittsburgh will travel to Lincoln Financial Field to square off against the 11-2 Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15.

Though the Steelers’ defense is the backbone of the team, the offense is much improved compared to previous years, primarily because of the quarterback play. Justin Fields started the first six games of the season and posted a 4-2 record. Russell Wilson took over as the starter in Week 7 after recovering from a calf injury and has been one of the most efficient signal callers in football. Entering Week 15, Wilson has tossed 12 touchdowns to just three interceptions with a 6-1 record.

Pittsburgh has gotten solid play from both of their quarterbacks this season, but the future of the position is surrounded by uncertainty, as Wilson and Fields will be unrestricted free agents this offseason. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Dec.8 that the Steelers starting quarterback for 2025 is likely on the roster, meaning either Wilson or Fields will likely return to the team next season. But the offseason is still months away, so there is still a scenario where the franchise will have a new starting signal caller in 2025.

If Wilson and Fields don’t return to Pittsburgh next year, Fox Sports’ Rob Rang predicts the Steelers will select their quarterback of the future in Miami’s Cam Ward in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Steelers success this season while rotating quarterbacks is commendable, but with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields pending free agents, the club has little choice but to be evaluating this year’s rookie crop. Agile, instinctive and accurate, Ward could be a fun fit should Pittsburgh decide to draft and develop a young quarterback.

Ward is a dynamic player with a ton of potential, as the 22-year-old has totaled 175 touchdowns in his five-year collegiate career (155 passing, 20 rushing), including 40 touchdowns (36 passing, four rushing) this season for Miami. Ward is a candidate to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, Dec.14, an award given to the best college football player of the year.

Though Ward is extremely talented and has the intangibles to be a franchise quarterback, it’s unlikely the Texas native will be available when Pittsburgh is on the clock late in Round 1. Ward will likely be a top-ten pick and is one of the most electric players in the 2025 draft class.

Cam Ward on the Steelers would be exhilarating, but the chances of Ward landing in Pittsburgh are slim. General manager Omar Khan will have a plethora of quarterback options on the table this offseason, but the exciting Miami signal-caller won’t be one of those options.
