Raptors have link to 255-pound free agent forward with 21.5 PPG

If the Toronto Raptors decide at any point this season that they could use some more bulk inside, they don’t have to look far.

Playing for their G League team, Raptors 905, is a 255-pound interior presence averaging 21.5 points per game.

That’s David Roddy. He’s currently an NBA free agent while signed on a G League contract.

Bleacher Report ranks Roddy as the current No. 10 free agent available in the NBA.

“Roddy is a unique player, perhaps with more of an NFL build than an NBA one,” B/R writes. “At 6’4″, he’s a sturdy 255 lbs. His most significant potential may lie on the defensive side of the ball, perhaps in a role similar to Josh Hart of the New York Knicks. What’s most notably missing is his outside shot (career 30.2 percent from three-point range). He’s currently on the Raptors 905, G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, averaging 21.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.”

Roddy always had some playmaking skill to his game in college, too, as a solid passer.

It can be hard for a guy like him to break through, not just because of his own physical differences but because teams often can’t figure out how to use a guy like Roddy. There have to be distinct moves made to utilize him, and that isn’t something teams will always do for a back-of-rotation player.

Roddy isn’t just available to the Raptors, although a signing by Toronto would be convenient. Any NBA team could notice what he’s doing right now and give him a shot.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Roddy get NBA action somewhere before this season is complete.
