It took four plate appearances, but Ernie Clement got it done.
His hit streak continues.
Did anyone see this coming for the Toronto Blue Jays’ utility man? Not anyone but his biggest fans, a club which is quickly growing as Toronto moves closer to winning the World Series.
With a single to center field in the eighth inning Wednesday night, Clement extended his postseason hitting streak to 11 games.
He made outs his first two times up in Game 5. Then he lined a sacrifice fly to center his third time, a productive at bat that wouldn’t do anything for his hit streak.
But the fourth time, facing lefty Anthony Banda, Clement stayed through a pitch to line it up the middle for a knock.
He eventually came around to score on an Isiah Kiner-Falefa single to put the Blue Jays up 6-1.

Clement has been one of the best hitters in the playoffs despite having never appeared in a postseason game before. Cleveland and Oakland both cut Clement loose before he arrived in Toronto in late 2023 and proved he belonged.
Last year and this, Clement was nearly an everyday player. His contact skill and versatile, excellent glovework make him an easy guy to slot in any spot in the lineup and field.
In the bright lights of the playoffs, Clement has been at his best.
A hitting streak is a bit old school, but this one from Clement is as impressive as can be. He’s batted nearly .400 in the playoffs. His 1-for-3 (.333) day actually lowers his postseason average.
He shows up day in and day out and gets the job done. You can’t ask for more than that.
