Why Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got an out by whacking first base with his hand

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was just having fun.

In the bottom of the eighth inning of World Series Game 5, Vladdy made a sweet diving stop toward the first base line.

Shohei Ohtani had hit a rocket, but Guerrero Jr. snagged the grounder.

And what he did next was just quite fun.

Vladdy whacked first base with his open right palm.

He was holding the ball in his glove.

Why did Vladdy touch first base with his hand?

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit first base with his right hand because he could.

As long as the ball is in his possession, he can touch the base for a force out with any part of his body.

He chose to do the emphatic, exclamation point-level hit with his hand.

The Blue Jays had opened up a 6-1 lead, and Vladdy had robbed Ohtani of doing any damage.

The smack of the bag ends up working sort of like a spike of the football. Guerrero was fired up, and he showed it.
