Austin Reaves joins elite Lakers history that doesn’t include LeBron James

Austin Reaves continues to be the gift that keeps on giving for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Despite a 122-108 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night, Reaves erupted for 41 points, just 24 hours after dropping 51. His 92 combined points over the last two games put him in elite company, joining just five other players in franchise history to accomplish the feat: Anthony Davis, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Kobe Bryant.

Yes, you read that correctly — even LeBron James isn’t on that list.

James has scored more than 92 points over a two-game span in his career, but it came as a member of the Cavaliers. The most combined points James has scored over two games in a Lakers uniform is 90.

Head coach JJ Redick has turned to Reaves to ignite the Lakers’ offense in the absence of James, who’s out until mid-November, and Luka Dončić, who remains sidelined for the next week with a finger sprain. Reaves has been lightning in a bottle, averaging 35.8 points, 8.5 assists and 6.8 rebounds on 57.3 percent shooting from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

The fifth-year guard set high expectations for himself entering the 2025–26 season, turning down a four-year, $89.2 million contract extension this past offseason. It’s a bold gamble on both his growth and the Lakers’ future, as many within the organization view Reaves as a cornerstone for the post-LeBron era.

Injuries continue to pile up for Los Angeles beyond their top stars. Gabe Vincent is expected to miss 2–4 weeks, Jaxson Hayes remains out, and key contributors Adou Thiero and Maxi Kleber have yet to make their season debuts.

While it may be too early to discuss adding more scoring support, the Lakers’ limited options could pave the way for Reaves to craft the breakout season he envisioned. Los Angeles will look to bounce back against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, October 29, as the 27-year-old aims to continue his scoring heroics.
