World Series Game 3 starting pitchers: Blue Jays send Max Scherzer to mound to face Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers will play Game 3 of the 2025 World Series on Monday, October 27. The series is tied 1-1 after the teams split the first two games of the series in Toronto.

With the series switching to the West Coast and Los Angeles, the Blue Jays will take over as the road team for the first time in the series. Toronto will begin the game hitting against Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow, while the Blue Jays will counter with veteran pitcher Max Scherzer pitching against his former team.

Here is more on the starting pitching matchup for Game 3 of the 2025 World Series.

Glasnow will take the bump in the top of the first inning for the Dodgers, while the Blue Jays counter with the veteran — and former Dodger — Scherzer.

Glasnow debuted in 2016 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is called “Baby Giraffe” because he stands at an impressive 6-8, looking even taller when he’s on the pitching mound. Glasnow has developed into a solid starter and is a borderline ace in a Dodgers rotation that feels full of them. The righty was named an All-Star in 2024, and that remains the lone accolade of his career, as an elbow injury kept him out of the 2024 World Series, which the Dodgers won over the New York Yankees.

Scherzer likely already has a bust made for the Hall of Fame. He has been in the big leagues since 2008 and has nearly 3,500 strikeouts in his career. Scherzer is an eight-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion and a three-time Cy Young winner. He has thrown two no-hitters in his career and has a share of the single-game record for strikeouts in a game (20).

Max Scherzer stats

Here is a look at how Scherzer has pitched this season.

2025 Regular Season

Starts W-L IP ERA WHIP K K/9
17 5-5 85.0 5.19 1.29 82 8.7

2025 Postseason

Starts W-L IP ERA WHIP K K/9
1 1-0 5.2 3.18 1.24 5 7.9

The 41-year-old Scherzer missed time in 2025 with a thumb injury and was only able to start 17 games for Toronto in the regular season. The future Hall-of-Famer ended up being a veteran who could help eat up innings, and wasn’t his normal self, finishing with the highest ERA of his career.

Scherzer has only started one game so far this postseason. He got the starting nod in the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners. Scherzer started Game 4, and pitched well. He went 5.2 innings and allowed two earned runs, one a solo home run from Josh Naylor in the second inning, and an RBI single from Eugenio Suarez in the bottom of the sixth.

Max Scherzer vs. Shohei Ohtani

Here is how Scherzer has fared in limited action against Ohtani.

AVG .333
H-AB 2-6
HR 0
RBI 0
OPS .833

Scherzer and Ohtani have largely played in separate leagues. As such, Ohtani only has six at-bats against Scherzer. He doesn’t have a home run or RBI yet and is 2-6 with a single and a double. Scherzer has struck him out twice and hasn’t walked Ohtani yet.

Tyler Glasnow stats

Here is a look at how Glasnow has pitched this season.

2025 Regular Season

Starts W-L IP ERA WHIP K K/9
18 4-3 90.1 3.19 1.10 106 10.6

2025 Postseason

Starts W-L IP ERA WHIP K K/9
2 0-0 13.1 0.68 1.13 18 12.2

Glasnow has made three total appearances in the postseason so far, but only two have been starts. He is still searching for his first decision in the 2025 playoffs. That hasn’t stopped him from dominating hitters, striking out 18 in just 13.1 innings of work.

Glasnow missed most of the 2025 season due to leg, shoulder and back injuries. He still managed to make 18 starts in the regular season. Glasnow’s record doesn’t accurately reflect how well he pitched. He struck out 106 batters in 90.1 innings and had a 1.10 WHIP.

AVG .353

Before landing in Los Angeles, Glasnow spent time with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays. This allowed him more at-bats against Guerrero Jr. The Toronto first baseman is hitting .353 against the right-handed pitcher.

Of Guerrero’s six hits, three of them are extra base hits with two doubles and a home run. Glasnow has walked him four times and struck him out five times.

MORE DODGERS NEWS:

Blue Jays vs. Dodgers Game 4 starting pitchers

Toronto and Los Angeles have already named their Game 4 starters. These decisions aren’t binding, so the managers can still make changes depending on how Game 3 goes, but that would be very surprising.

The Blue Jays will go with Shane Bieber while the Dodgers counter with Ohtani. Bieber was a midseason acquisition by Toronto and when he finally recovered from his elbow injury that ended his 2024 campaign, he made seven regular-season starts and had a 4-2 record with a 3.57 ERA.

Ohtani started slowly ramping up his pitching throughout the 2025 season. He started 14 games in the regular season and had a 1-1 record with a 2.87 ERA. Ohtani has pitched two games so far in the 2025 postseason. He has a 2-0 record and a 2.25 ERA, with 19 strikeouts in 12 innings of work.
