Giants predicted to replace Justin Verlander with Max Scherzer

Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are two of the best active pitchers in MLB in terms of body of work. While they haven’t found as much success in recent years and deal with injuries at times, Scherzer and Verlander’s resumes speak to how great they have been over the course of their career.

Both are set to become free agents, and it will be interesting to see which teams are interested in both future Hall of Famers.

A bold prediction has Max Scherzer replacing Justin Verlander on the Giants

In a recent bold predictions piece by Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, Justin Verlander’s replacement is predicted to be Max Scherzer.

“Another twist here is that the Giants—who employed Verlander in 2025—might end up being the best suitor for Scherzer this offseason.”

Scherzer made 17 starts this season and posted a 5.19 ERA in 85 innings. The one-year, $15.5 million deal hasn’t quite worked out how the Blue Jays had hoped, and they will likely let Scherzer walk this offseason.

As for Verlander, his 4-11 record in 2025 was a bit ugly, but he posted a 3.85 ERA in 152 innings. Verlander also signed a one-year, $15 million deal this past offseason. Verlander had an impressive back-half of the campaign, and should have no problem finding his next MLB organization. The Blue Jays could even be a suitor to land the 42-year-old Verlander.
