Montreal Expos in spotlight thanks to Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero and a new documentary

The Montreal Expos are taking back as much of the spotlight as they can manage.

It’s a fascinating time for the former MLB team, for three reasons: the Toronto Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero and a new documentary.

The Blue Jays are in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, putting Canadian baseball back in the spotlight. Since the Expos went away, Toronto has held Canada’s only MLB team.

Then you’ve got Guerrero. The father Guerrero played for the Expos. His son, Vladdy Jr., is the $500 million superstar for the Blue Jays.

There are pictures and videos that circulate of Vladito, little Vladdy, in an oversized Expos uniform as a small child when his dad played there. Guerrero Jr. is a Canadian citizen because of his dad’s time in Montreal.

And then there’s the documentary.

Out now on Netflix, it’s called, Who Killed the Montreal Expos?

The Expos’ final game came in 2004, but the downfall may have begun in 1994. That Expos team was loaded, including Guerrero, but didn’t get a chance at the World Series because of the strike.

A decade later, the Expos left for Washington, D.C.

There likely will never be an MLB team in Montreal again. So the closest they get to the spotlight is a week like this one.
