The New Orleans Saints, at 1-6, are one of many teams that contenders around the NFL are looking to for potential trade deadline pickups.
While some of the Saints’ veteran defenders could be trade candidates, two offensive weapons are the highlights of the Saints’ potential trade chips. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are drawing a lot of trade interest, unsurprising, with the wide receiver-needy teams being abundant and the available receivers being limited.
However, according to a new report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Saints are expected to keep Olave amid those trade rumors. After previous reporting on a possible Olave extension, this updated report points to Olave staying in New Orleans.
Saints expected to hold onto Chris Olave despite trade rumors
“Barring an unforeseen change,” Russini reports, “the Saints are not expected to move WR Chris Olave despite interested suitors. Last week, I reported that the two sides are discussing an extension.”
While teams around the NFL eye the Saints’ wide receiver room for potential trade targets, they will have to shift their attention elsewhere if they were looking for Olave.
The 25-year-old receiver is in his fourth year in the NFL, and so far, he’s been impressive. Through seven weeks, he has 440 yards receiving and three touchdowns on 44 receptions. Compared to 2024, he has more yards, catches, and touchdowns in one fewer game.
He’s under contract for the 2026 season, so the Saints, even if they weren’t working on an extension, wouldn’t have to move him at the deadline if he wasn’t part of their plans.

But, with the extension talks and this new report that the Saints aren’t expected to move on from Olave, it looks like the first-round pick from 2022 is expected to stick in New Orleans for the foreseeable future.
While Olave might be off the trade block, Shaheed is a player to keep an eye on. Russini isn’t reporting that the speedster is off the block, so while one Saints wide receiver isn’t expected to be dealt, the other top option could be on the move still.
At 1-6, entering a tough Week 8 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and a tough Week 9matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the Saints could enter the trade deadline at 1-8, and be clear sellers. But Olave isn’t expected to be a part of those trade deadline plans, as the Saints are poised to keep the veteran receiver.
