Orioles viewed as potential fit to land former Athletics pitcher in free agency

The Baltimore Orioles are coming off a rather poor season. They could not get much going at the start, which led to them firing their manager, Brandon Hyde.

After that, not much changed. The team continued to struggle to push runs across the board and limit opponents from scoring with their team’s ERA of 4.60.

The front office cannot feel comfortable with its current starting rotation. They will certainly head into the offseason looking to make an upgrade.

Orioles viewed as potential fit to land former Athletics pitcher in free agency

The Orioles could turn their attention to free agency in order to make an upgrade. There are plenty of quality starting pitchers looking for a new home.

One of these pitchers is former Athletics starter Chris Bassitt. MLB’s Mark Feinsand views Baltimore as a potential landing spot for the 2023 AL wins leader.

“Bassitt remains a durable innings-eater in his late 30s, topping the 170-inning mark for the fourth consecutive season in 2025. He’s not overpowering hitters – his strikeout percentage (22.6) ranked in the middle of the AL – but he induces weak contact with his sinker-cutter-curveball mix, ranking in the top 20 percent in average exit velocity and hard-hit percentage.”

Bassitt may not be a name that gets the fans jumping, but he would be a great addition to the club. He knows how to induce a groundball and consistently misses opposing hitters’ barrels.

Feinsand also believes the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals as other potential fits. His market may not be as big as others, but he will draw attention from multiple teams over the winter.
