Could Lionel Messi’s new Inter Miami contract be his last?

Lionel Messi has signed a new three-year contract to stay with Inter Miami.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) side in 2023, departing Paris Saint-Germain.

In his 53 appearances for David Beckham’s club, Messi has scored 50 goals.

The announcement came ahead of the club’s MLS Cup playoff opener against Nashville SC on October 24.

The Herons are reigning league champions and currently sit third in the table, while the Argentine remains top scorer with 29 goals so far.

The 38 year old will continue on, while former Barcelona teammates -who are alongside him at Miami – Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will confirm at the end of the current season.

It’s been called into question when Messi may decide to retire.

He led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, and will hope to do defend the trophy in 2026 in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

This new contract with the Floridian side looks like it could be his last.

The number 10 has had an impressive career, with the majority of his time spent at Barcelona. Over 17 years with the side, Messi made 778 appearances and 672 goals in all competitions – an all-time record for the club.

He spent two years at PSG, before heading to Miami with no signs of slowing down.

Though he may be getting older, it doesn’t seem like Messi is ready to give up yet. And with a World Cup on the horizon, it’ll be the best judge of what happens next for the footballing great.

Retaining the World Cup for Argentina will be another milestone for the Argentine to tick off, and could contribute to his professional aspirations.
