The New York Yankees are now in the offseason after a brutal loss in the ALDS, and are coming to terms with next year’s roster construction. With free agents like Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham headlining their problems, a couple other less-valued ones are falling through the cracks.
One of those free agents is reliever Luke Weaver. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo believes the righty will cut ties with New York and will sign with the Yanks’ eternal rival, the Boston Red Sox.

“The list of mid-tier free agent veterans is long — and includes Kirby Yates, Luke Weaver, Kyle Finnegan, Wilson, Matz and many, many others…The prediction here is that the Red Sox sign two arms — a righty and a lefty — but don’t break the bank for either. There are many trustworthy options internally (including some projected as starters) who can be counted on, too. Wild guess? Wilson and Luke Weaver,” Cotillo wrote.
This past season, Weaver had a 3.62 ERA, 72 Ks, a WHIP of 1.021, and eight saves in 64 games. While these aren’t amazing numbers, his 2024 campaign was much better, posting a 2.89 ERA with 103 Ks, a WHIP of 0.929, and 4 saves in 62 games.

This makes it more likely the Red Sox will try to take him from New York, as they love their reclamation projects and stealing from the Yankees; examples being Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, and Carlos Narvaez.
Hopefully, the Yankees make a decision as soon as possible; otherwise, The Rivalry may get just a bit deeper.
