That idea comes from The Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer and it has the Steelers acquiring New York Jets running back Breece Hall at the trade deadline.
Here’s what Iyer says about the trade suggestion:
“The Steelers are forcing Jaylen Warren into too big of a role ahead of Kenneth Gainwell with rookie Kaleb Johnson being a disappointing non-factor,” Iyer said. “Warren should be more of a complementary reserve to a more explosive scrimmage threat, which Hall represents.”
Hall, who has tallied an impressive 612 yards from scrimmage despite the terrible offensive showing from New York this season, remains one of the most likely trade candidates in the NFL ahead of the deadline.
The Jets are awful and have a ton of roster holes to fill, so it would make zero sense for them to spend big money on extending Hall, who will be a free agent in 2026.
If Hall hits free agency, there’s a very good chance he leaves the dumpster fire in New York for greener pastures. Knowing that, the Jets need to get something for him now before he leaves next year for nothing.
The problem with this idea is that the Steelers are highly unlikely to make this significant of an addition at running back, if any at all.
We know Pittsburgh likes its one-two punch of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, and both have played well for the most part this season.
It’s true rookie Kaleb Johnson has been a zero, but that doesn’t necessitate Pittsburgh making this big of a move.
All that said, we certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Hall with the Steelers. After all, he would most definitely provide an upgrade for Pittsburgh given his explosive skillset as a rusher and receiver, and he already has familiarity with Aaron Rodgers from their days together with the Jets, which would help his acclimation.
But, at the end of the day, we believe the Steelers will focus their resources on bigger positions of need, like wide receiver, for example.
