Who is Sixers preseason standout Kennedy Chandler?

The Philadelphia 76ers dropped their third straight preseason game last night, falling in blowout fashion to the Orlando Magic. Despite the loss, the Sixers may have discovered an unexpected contributor for their rotation.

Kennedy Chandler, the 38th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, scored 16 points — one shy of Tyrese Maxey, who led the team with 17. It marked Chandler’s third straight game in double figures, following 15 points in the second preseason matchup and 10 in the opener.

Chandler also showcased his versatility as a playmaker and defender, adding five assists and four steals in the loss. His consistent energy and aggressiveness have made him one of the few bright spots for Philadelphia during an otherwise underwhelming preseason.

The 23-year-old point guard has had a winding path to this point. After being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies, Chandler played sparingly as a rookie in 2022-23, averaging just 7.8 minutes, 2.2 points and 1.6 assists in 36 games. He did not appear in the NBA at all last season, instead spending the year with the Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate to refine his game.

Now, Chandler is looking to earn a spot on an NBA roster once again — and his recent performances may be helping his case. Whether he ultimately secures a role with the 76ers or another team, his play this preseason has turned heads.

Philadelphia will wrap up its preseason schedule on Oct. 17 against the Minnesota Timberwolves before opening the regular season Oct. 22 in Boston against the Celtics.
