Tigers vs. Mariners results: Seattle advances to ALCS after marathon 15-inning win over Detroit

JUMP TO:

The Seattle Mariners are heading back to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2001.

Friday night’s game bled into Saturday morning at least on the East Coast. Seattle scored first, pushing across a small ball run in the bottom of the second inning. Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter then hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Seattle responded again with another run in the bottom of the seventh.

Then, despite several great chances for both teams, we went eight innings without a run. Finally, in the bottom of the 15th inning, with the bases loaded, Jorge Polanco ripped a single to right field to score the game-winning run. The game lasted about five hours, and when the dust settled, the Tigers’ season was done, and the Mariners now have a day off before having to take on the Blue Jays in the ALCS.

Carpenter was the highlight for the Tigers’ lineup, finishing 4-5 with a home run, two RBI and two walks. Seattle’s Naylor went 3-6 with a stolen base and a run.

The wildest thing about the game going 15 innings is that the dominant pitching performances from the starters feels like it happened a week ago. Tarik Skubal pitched six innings and allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out 13 for the Tigers. George Kirby got the starting nod for the Mariners and went five innings while allowing an earned run on three hits, while punching out six.

The Sporting News tracked updates for scores and highlights from Game 5 of the 2025 ALDS between the Tigers and the Mariners.

Tigers vs. Mariners updates, highlights from ALDS Game 5

All times ET.

Bottom of the Fifteenth — Mariners 3, Tigers 2

1:08 a.m. — Detroit turns to Tommy Kahnle out of the bullpen. Crawford singled to right. Arozarena then got hit by a pitch. Raleigh lined out to center, and the runners advanced to second and third. Rodriguez was intentionally walked. With the bases loaded and one out, Polanco worked a 3-2 count, and then ripped a single to right field. Crawford scores and the marathon game is finally over.

Top of the Fifteenth

12:58 a.m. — Castillo starts the inning by striking out Carpenter. Torres worked a full count, before grounding out to third. Greene saw only one pitch and fouled out to left.

Bottom of the Fourteenth

12:52 a.m. — Despite struggling in the 13th, Flaherty is still on the mound for the Tigers. Naylor grounded out to second, and Rivas struck out. Robles walked on four straight pitches. Crawford had a 2-2 count, but Robles went to swipe second. He was thrown out, so we head to the 15th.

Top of the Fourteenth

12:43 a.m. — Bazardo continues pitching for Seattle. McKinstry began the inning by flying out to center. Dingler then doubled down the left field line. Meadows strikes out looking. Baez comes up with two outs, but will face Luis Castillo out of the bullpen. Baez saw two pitches and popped out to first.

Bottom of the Thirteenth

12:31 a.m. — Detroit brings on Jack Flaherty with the game on the line. Raleigh works a full count and walks to start the inning. Rodriguez also gets to a full count and draws a walk. Seattle has first and second with no outs. For the third time in three hitters, Polanco gets to a 3-2 count. He strikes out swinging on the eighth pitch of the at-bat.

Suarez, keeping on brand for this half inning, also got to a 3-2 count. He then grounded to shortstop for a double play. We head to the 14th.

Top of the Thirteenth

12:18 a.m. — Bazardo is still pitching for the Mariners. Greene starts the inning by striking out. Torkelson battled to a 3-2 count, but struck out on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. Keith also worked a 3-2 count, but struck out looking.

Bottom of the Twelfth

12:09 a.m. — Montero is still pitching for Detroit. Rivas started the inning fighting to a 3-2 count, and then walked. Montero tried to pick him off and threw the ball away. Rivas advanced to second. Robles then got hit in the hand, and there was a lengthy review. While it looked like the ball hit the bat and then his hand, which would be a foul ball, but the reviewers didn’t see it that way and awarded him first base.

Crawford flied out to left, and the runners couldn’t advance. Arozarena grounded to the pitcher, who fired to second for one and then they got Arozarena on the back end to end the inning.

Top of the Twelfth

11:56 p.m. — McKinstry starts the inning off with an infield single. Dingler singled to left and McKinstry stopped at second. Detroit has runners on first and second with no outs. Gilbert is pulled, and Eduard Bazardo comes into the game.

Meadows is trying to lay down a bunt to move the runners over. He bunts the first one foul, but then gets the second one down. Meadows is out at first, but now Detroit has runners on second and third with only one out. Baez fouls off the first pitch he sees, and then breaks his bat hitting a ball to third base. The throw comes home, and McKinstry is out at home.

Carpenter gets intentionally walked. The bases are loaded for Torres. He watches the first pitch of the at-bat, then takes a ball. Torres fouls off the third pitch and then flies out to right.

Bottom of the Eleventh

11:41 p.m. — Keider Montero comes on for Detroit. Polanco has a loud out to deep center. Montero gets a strike early on Suarez, but then falls behind 3-1. Suarez popped out to second for the second out of the inning. Naylor was facing a 3-2 count, and grounds out to shortstop to send the game to the 12th.

Top of the Eleventh Inning

11:31 p.m. — Carpenter singled to center to start the inning. Raleigh allowed a passed ball for the first time all year, and Carpenter scampered to second. Torres lined out to right, and Carpenter stayed put. Greene gets intentionally walked.

Torkelson flew out to left field. Keith struck out swinging.

Bottom of the Tenth Inning

11:20 p.m. — Troy Melton comes on to pitch for the Tigers. Robles doubles to right field to start the inning. Crawford broke his bat and flew out to second. Arozarena fouled off four pitches before striking out swinging. Detroit opted to intentionally walk Raleigh. Rodriguez grounded out to shortstop.

Top of the Tenth Inning

11:10 p.m. — As a reminder, there are no ghost runners in extra innings. Logan Gilbert makes his first ever relief appearance for Seattle. The typical starter gets Dingler to fly out to the warning track in center. Meadows struck out on four pitches.  Baez only saw one pitch and flew out to center.

Bottom of the Ninth Inning

11:02 p.m. — Vest stays on for the Tigers. Polanco saw two pitches and lined out to center. It took six pitches, but Vest strikes out Suarez for the second out. Naylor singles to right field, which brings up the birthday hero, Rivas. His luck ran out and he struck out looking to send this one to extras.

Top of the Ninth Inning

10:53 p.m. — Torkelson struck out to begin the inning, and then Munoz got Keith to line out to shortstop for two quick outs. McKinstry struck out on five pitches to end the frame.

Bottom of the Eighth Inning

10:47 p.m. — Will Vest comes on to pitch for Detroit. Crawford flew out to center. Arozarena was up 3-0, but Vest got it back to a full count. The Detroit pitcher then hit Arozarena. Raleigh comes up to rampant MVP chants. Vest strikes him out on four pitches for the second out of the inning. He then strikes out Rodriguez, keeping the game tied at two heading into the ninth.

Top of the Eighth Inning

10:36 p.m. — Meadows starts the inning grounding out to shortstop. Brash gets a scare as Baez hits one deep to center, but it does on the warning track. Brash’s day is done, and Andres Munoz comes out of the pen. Carpenter works a full count, and draws a walk on seven pitches. Torres sees five pitches and also walks.

Greene took a ball on the first pitch, but then popped out to third.

Bottom of the Seventh Inning — Tigers 2, Mariners 2

10:21 p.m. — Skubal’s night is done and Kyle Finnegan takes the mound for Detroit. Rodriguez flied out to center. Polanco walked, and then Suarez flew out to right on a ball that died at the wall. Naylor singled to right, and Polanco stopped at second. Finnegan was taken out for Tyler Holton. He faced Leo Rivas, who had his first-ever playoff at-bat. On his birthday, Rivas singled to left, scoring Polanco and tying the game.

Robles ended the inning grounding into a fielder’s choice to shortstop.

Top of the Seventh Inning

10:03 p.m. — Brash continued pitching for Seattle and worked a quick one-two-three inning. He got Keith to strike out swinging, McKinstry to line out to left, and Dingler to line out to center.

Bottom of the Sixth Inning

9:56 p.m. — Skubal is now working with the lead, and struck out Crawford. Arozarena saw eight pitches but popped out to shortstop. Skubal then struck out Raleigh on three pitches. The lefty is now through six innings at 99 pitches.

Top of the Sixth Inning — Tigers 2, Mariners 1

9:47 p.m. — Javier Baez lines a pitch to the outfield. It looked like it was going to be a single, but he pushed it into a double. Seattle pulled Kirby and put in Gabe Speier for the lefty-lefty matchup against Carpenter. Despite not having the stereotypical advantage at the plate, that didn’t stop Carpenter from depositing a ball over the fence in right-center.

Torres then grounded out to third, and Greene grounded out to first. Speier was then pulled in favor of Matt Brash, who pitched to Torkelson. Brash struck him out on three pitches to end the inning.

Bottom of the Fifth Inning

9:35 p.m. — Skubal got a quick out as Naylor lined out to center. Garver went down swinging on six pitches. Robles fights for a 3-2 count, but flew out to right. Skubal is through five innings, but has thrown 85 pitches compared to Kirby’s 65.

Top of the Fifth Inning

9:26 p.m. — Seattle has two pitchers warming up in the bullpen. McKinstry grounded out to first to start the frame. Dingler works a full count, but strikes out on the sixth pitch of the at-bat. Meadows struck out and Kirby is through five shutout innings.

Bottom of the Fourth Inning

9:17 p.m. — Rodriguez starts the inning with a six-pitch strikeout. Polanco battled and saw seven pitches, but then also struck out. Suarez becomes the seventh Mariner batter in a row to strike out. Skubal is at 71 pitches with 10 strikeouts through four innings.

Top of the Fourth Inning

9:08 p.m. — Greene started the inning grounding out to the pitcher. Torkelson then lined out to left field. Keith was then hit, but caught stealing to end the inning.

Bottom of the Third Inning

8:59 p.m. — Skubal strikes out Crawford on six pitches. The lefty’s pitch count is up to 42 already. Arozarena broke his bat on a foul ball, but once he got a new bat, he struck out. Skubal strikes out the side, getting Raleigh to whiff on a 100-mph fastball. Detroit’s starter is up to 54 pitches through three innings.

Top of the Third Inning

8:50 p.m. — Parker Meadows saw six pitches, but grounded out to first. Kirby then struck out Javier Baez on three pitches. Carpenter lined a single to right field. Torres worked a full count before striking out to end the inning.

Bottom of the Second Inning — Mariners 1, Tigers 0

8:40 p.m. — Skubal strikes out Eugenio Suarez on four pitches to begin the inning. Josh Naylor doubled down the left field line. Skubal threw a changeup in the dirt to Mitch Garver, and Naylor timed his steal perfectly, taking third. Garver hit a sac fly to center and the stolen base pays off as Seattle is on the board.

Skubal keeps it to one run as he strikes out Victor Robles for the third out.

Top of the Second Inning

8:30 p.m. — Colt Keith wasted little time starting the inning with a hard ground ball up the middle, but it was fielded, and he was thrown out at first. Zach McKinstry then followed it up with a groundball of his own, but to second for the second out of the inning. Dillon Dingler grounded the second pitch he saw to shortstop for a quick one-two-three inning.

Bottom of the First Inning

8:24 p.m. — Skubal gets Randy Arozarena to lightly hit one back to the mound. Skubal fires it to first, and Torkelson digs it out of the dirt for the first out of the inning.

Skubal starts Cal Raleigh 3-0, but then battles back to a full count. Raleigh sends the seventh pitch of the at-bat into left field for a single. Skubal then struck out Julio Rodriguez on three straight pitches for the second out of the inning. Jorge Polanco battled in his at-bat, but struck out on six pitches to end the inning.

Top of the First Inning

8:14 p.m. — Kirby starts the game off with a strike, an 86 mph slider down the middle to Kerry Carpenter. The Tigers outfielder laced one to shortstop, and it hit off J.P. Crawford’s glove for the first hit of the game.

Kirby responded by punching out Gleyber Torres on three straight pitches. Riley Greene then grounded to second, but the Mariners only got the lead runner and no double play. Spencer Torkelson struck out swinging to end the frame.

Pre-Game

8:00 p.m. — The Mariners have one of the deeper rotations in the playoffs. Seattle manager Dan Wilson says he is ready to showcase it with Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert and even Bryce Miller available out of the bullpen if needed.

7:35 p.m. — Mariners fan Jameson Turner is in the stands for the series finale. He went viral on social media for catching a Cal Raleigh home run in Detroit while wearing a shirt that said “dump 61 here.”

6:45 p.m. — Lefty Tarik Skubal will take the mound for Detroit. He went 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts. Skubal’s ERA and strikeouts numbers were the second-highest in the league this season.

6:15 p.m. — Here is how the hometown Mariners line up for the series finale.

6:00 p.m. — Here’s how the Tigers will line up for Game 5.
