The Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks put on quite the show Thursday night, pulling off a sequence of events late in the game that may have never been combined like this on NHL ice before.
Pick things up late in the third period, inside two minutes, with the Vegas net empty as they trail, 3-2.
The Sharks get a half breakaway, and most times, they would’ve put the puck into the empty net for a two-goal lead and almost certain victory.
This time, a mad scramble by the Golden Knights’ defenders leads to a couple blocks just in front of goal to keep the puck out.
And then quickly going the other way, Jack Eichel flings the puck toward the net, it takes a deflection, and it finds its way in for the game-tying goal.
That made it 3-3 with 90 seconds left in regulation.

But they weren’t done.
In overtime, Sharks goalie Alex Nedeljkovic came out of his net to play the puck, and he didn’t handle it well.
The on-charging Reilly Smith swiped the puck from the goaltender, who was very much not in his goal.
That allowed Smith to skate in unimpeded and roll the puck into the net for the walk-off goal.

The Sharks certainly will be kicking themselves over this. They were so close to a season-opening win.
Instead, they lost with a comedy of errors, and it’s the Golden Knights who got to go home happy.
