Oilers extend 40 point defenseman to $49 million deal

The Oilers made a big extension today by signing defenseman Jake Walman to a long term deal, keeping the recently acquired defenseman in Edmonton for the long run.

It might not be the biggest deal of the day for Edmonton, but nonetheless its a pricy one coming in at $7 million for 7 years making Walman $49 million richer.

The 29 year old Toronto native had a career season last year, amassing 7 goals and 33 assists on the blueline in time split between the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers.

What does this move mean for the Oilers?

This massive Walman extension keeps the current trend going of big ticket deals coming in for NHL defenseman across the National Hockey League in an ever evolving market. Walman’s $7 million price tag is quite an increase, more than doubling his former $3.4 million deal.

Jake Walman’s high pay raise can also be partly attributed to Oilers star Connor McDavid taking less money on his own extension to allow the Oilers the ability to keep this core around and remain a top contender for Lord Stanley. Walman would not have received the raise he sought out had the Oilers been forced to pay McDavid his well over $15 million worth.

Over the course of his 6 year NHL career, Walman has totaled 32 goals and 59 assists for 91 points in 267 regular season games. In his postseason career, he has touted 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points in 23 games.
