Bills vs. Patriots final score, result: Stefon Diggs, Drake Maye hand Buffalo first loss of season

JUMP TO:

Revenge is a dish best served cold — ice cold.

The New England Patriots haven’t enjoyed much success when matched up against the Buffalo Bills in recent seasons. But on Sunday, they found another gear, turning to a pair of titans — one a fresh-faced newcomer, the other a wily veteran — to score an upset victory over their division rivals.

The Patriots downed the Bills 23-20 courtesy of a game-winning 52-yard kick from rookie Borregales. They were largely powered by their high-profile battery of quarterback Drake Maye and wideout Stefon Diggs.

Maye matched opposite number Josh Allen stride for stride, carving Buffalo’s defense up to the tune of 22-of-30 passing for 273 yards. Diggs, meanwhile, enjoyed his best game in years, fielding 10 catches for 146 yards — his most since the 2022 season.

The Patriots’ defense forced three turnovers and limited Pro Bowler James Cook to 49 rushing yards. And although they wobbled at times, they rarely went down, particularly during the first half.

Buffalo still represents the cream of the crop in the AFC East. But New England is coming. Sunday’s result made that abundantly clear.

The Sporting News tracked live updates from Sunday night’s clash between Buffalo and New England. Below are highlights, analysis and more from the joust between AFC East powerhouses.

Bills vs. Patriots live updates, highlights from ‘Sunday Night Football’

(All times Eastern)

End of fourth quarter: Patriots 23, Bills 20

11:28 p.m.: Allen’s effort falls short! The Patriots pull off the stunner at Highmark Stadium!

11:26 p.m.: A holding penalty on Samuel’s return means Allen has to get the ball 83 yards down the field with eight seconds to go.

11:25 p.m.: FIELD. GOAL! Borregales finds his target from 52 yards out! The Patriots take the lead! Just 15 seconds left.

Patriots 23, Bills 20

11:24 p.m.: Maye takes a sack to set up a potential go-ahead field goal. Here comes Andy Borregales, the Venezuelan standout who shined at Miami (Fla.).

11:21 p.m.: The Patriots are on the ascendancy as the clock dwindles. Maye hit Diggs with a wonder strike, evading pressure to flick a pass and set up a first down. After another Maye dart — this time to Kayshon Boutte — New England is on the right side of the 50 — and pushing for more.

11:12 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Prater levels the score at 20 apiece, capping off another solid drive that saw Buffalo flirt with scoring a touchdown before falling short on third down.

Patriots 20, Bills 20

11:00 p.m.: Buffalo’s defense firms up, forcing the three-and-out. Allen and Co. will get the ball back with a little less than six minutes left in regulation.

10:55 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! The Bills come right back down the field and find a score of their own. Allen hits Coleman in the corner of the end zone as Buffalo cuts its deficit to three.

Patriots 20, Bills 17

10:43 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Stevenson punches it in from short-range as New England pushes its lead to double digits!

Patriots 20, Bills 10

10:42 p.m.: Diggs has enjoyed the finest of returns to his (formerly) friendly confines. He’s up to nine catches for 134 yards thus far after turning a curl pattern into a 30-yard gain.

End of third quarter: Patriots 13, Bills 10

10:30 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! After climbing into the red zone, the Bills record their third giveaway of the game, this time courtesy of an Allen interception to Marcus Jones.

10:18 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! New England responds! Maye brought the Patriots down the field with a handful of lengthy completions, two of which were reeled in by Diggs. Stevenson finished the drive in style, creeping in from five yards out.

Patriots 13, Bills 10

10:10 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! The Bills find pay dirt for the first time in the contest! Allen slipped a check down to Curtis Samuel, who found the end zone from short-range to give Buffalo its first lead of the game.

Bills 10, Patriots 6

10:05 p.m.: We’re back in action in the second half. The Bills will look to cut into New England’s slim advantage — or perhaps open one for themselves.

End of second quarter: Patriots 6, Bills 3

9:49 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! The Pats nearly found the end zone courtesy of a Maye toss to Henry. However, the ball slipped from his grasp. They settle for a chip shot from 19 yards out to take the lead.

Patriots 3, Bills 3

9:44 p.m.: Maye is finding his footing as the half nears its close. Dropped a feather into Hunter Henry’s lap to breach into the red zone. Now, he slalom past would-be tacklers to give the Pats a chance to retake the lead.

9:28 p.m.: Allen bursts through the hole and marauds for 19 yards after escaping out of the pocket.

9:18 p.m.: The Pats nearly surrendered another fumble after Antonio Gibson was rocked while returning Prater’s kickoff. They recovered the unruly effort in the end. But it cost Gibson, who looks to have suffered some sort of lower body injury on the play.

9:13 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Matt Prater levels the score at three after hitting his target from 31 yards out.

Patriots 3, Bills 3

9:05 p.m.: The Bills are percolating after their early turnovers. A couple lengthy Allen passes has them on the cusp of scoring.

End of first quarter: Patriots 3, Bills 0

9:02 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! New England forced to settle for a field goal after seeing their drive stall out.

Patriots 3, Bills 0

8:57 p.m.: FUMBLE! The Bills turn the ball over again! Robert Spillane jars the ball loose from WR Keon Coleman. The subsequent tumbleweed falls into Jaylinn Hawkins’ hands, setting up New England in ideal field position deep in the red one.

8:52 p.m.: New England’s promising drive ends in ashes as Stefon Diggs sees Maye’s delicate pass slip through his grasp.

8:50 p.m.: Neither side has been able to find points in the opening eight or so minutes of action. The ball will trickle on back to New England after a scoreless Bills drive.

8:40 p.m.: FUMBLE! The Bills get the ball back! Rhamondre Stevenson puts the pall on the turd once more after fielding a pass from Drake Maye.

8:35 p.m.: FUMBLE! Josh Allen coughs up the ball after letting go of the ball on the snap. The Patriots fall on top of the bumbling orb to set themselves up in Bills territory!

8:30 p.m.: The Pats saw their subsequent drive fall short of expectations. Here come the Bills’ attack!

8:20 p.m.: And we’re off! The Patriots will start the game with the ball.

7:50 p.m.: And here’s a look at Buffalo’s “icy” new threads, cloaked in winter white.

7:40 p.m.: The stars are starting to find their place atop Highmark Stadium’s lush plains. We’re about 45 minutes away from the start of Sunday’s contest.

7:15 p.m.: The Bills and Patriots released their inactive list ahead of tonight’s contest. For the Bills, the biggest absentees are Matt Milano and Ed Oliver, both of whom haven’t seen the field in weeks. The Patriots will be without LB K’Lavon Chaisson, DT Eric Gregory, guard Caedan Wallace, WR Efton Chism and QB Tommy DeVito.
