The Milwaukee Brewers took on the Chicago Cubs at home for Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday. Freddy Peralta was handed the ball to start the game, while Chicago handed the ball to Matthew Boyd.
Boyd did not last too long, as he struggled to keep the ball in the infield. Having been given a one-run lead by the time it came for him to pitch, he gave that run back and more.
Boyd proceeded to give up four runs before he was taken out. He did not get out of the first inning, only making two outs before Craig Counsell turned to Michael Soroka.
On the other side, Peralta was magnificent on Saturday. He went 5.2 innings, giving up just two runs, helping his club win the game by a score of 9-3.
Freddy Peralta dominates Cubs, joins Brewers’ royalty with 9 K’s
Freddy Peralta ended his afternoon with nine strikeouts. While that is not a season high for the hard-throwing righty, it does tie a franchise record.
According to the crew over at Talkin’ Baseball, Peralta’s nine strikeouts tie him for the most among other Milwaukee pitchers in the postseason. He shares the record with Brandon Woodruff, who did it in 2020, Yovani Gallardo, who did it in 2011, and the legendary Don Sutton, who did it in 1982.
Milwaukee now moves to 1-0 on the series, giving them a significant edge. They will now have a day off on Sunday before returning to Milwaukee for Game 2 of the NLDS.
