Paul Merson sends warning to Man Utd over hiring Oliver Glasner

Manchester United could be looking for a new manager soon, with Ruben Amorim’s time likely coming to a close.

There have been several names linked to the job, with other Premier League managers being considered.

One name is Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, but former Arsenal player Paul Merson has issued a warning to United over hiring Glasner.

What did Merson say about Glasner going to United?

In his Sky Sports column, Merson delivered his verdict on a potential move for Glasner to United, with the former Gunner urging United not to choose the Palace boss for the job.

Merson wrote, “He’s a three-at-the-back man, and it is being proven that it is a system that just doesn’t fit the players at Man Utd.

“Glasner is not a good fit for Man Utd.

“Of course, I’m sure he’d be adaptable, and he’s proven with how he handles the players, but the system he uses is just all wrong for United. Amorim can tell you that.”

Amorim has been using a system with three players at the back, but United’s backline has been exploited on numerous occasions this season.

Glasner has transformed Crystal Palace into one of the biggest sides in the Premier League, with the Eagles beating Liverpool over the weekend, but Merson fears that the system will still not work even under a different manager.

Merson continued, “There’s no rush for Glasner. I think he’s alright where he is, at the moment. However, he will have a problem if Man Utd come calling.

“It’s been proven over the years that people can’t turn down United.

“Even though what is going on at the club is not great, the name is still one of the biggest clubs in the world. How do you turn that down? You don’t.”

It remains to be seen what will happen with Amorim, but should United sack the Portuguese manager, Glasner is seen as a top choice for United’s hierarchy.
