Quentin Grimes, 76ers come to terms after drawn-out restricted free agency

After a long and drawn-out restricted free agency, the Philadelphia 76ers and Quentin Grimes have come to terms on an agreement for the 2025-26 season.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, “Restricted free agent Quentin Grimes is signing a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, agent David Bauman told ESPN. Grimes will now hold an inherent no-trade clause and enter a more flush market in unrestricted free agency next summer.”

Grimes now has some leverage over the Sixers and figures to be a key cog in their rotation ahead of a pivotal year for Philadelphia’s coaching staff and management.

Since being selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Grimes has been traded five times, as many years as he’s been in the league.

He was initially picked by the Los Angeles Clippers but was then dealt to the New York Knicks, where he played the first two years of his NBA career. Since then, Grimes has spent time with the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, and finally the 76ers.

When Philadelphia’s season took a turn for the worse in 2024-25, the former Kansas and Houston product was thrust into a larger role and flourished.

As a starter, Grimes averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 37 games, and shot 47.5% from the floor and 38.7% from three-point range. He even had a career-high 46-point game on March 17 against the Houston Rockets.

With 2024 first-round pick Jared McCain expected to miss time with a thumb injury, Grimes became much more important to the Sixers’ guard rotation, and even with Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey back in the mix, he should expect increased usage.

Grimes controls his destiny as he enters a contract year, and how he performs will dictate his market in the Summer of 2026.
