The MLB postseason is upon us. There is just one day until October, and all the wild-card series are set to start on Tuesday. While the San Diego Padres are worried about the Chicago Cubs, the team’s front office is likely thinking about the decisions that need to be made in the offseason.
This includes what to do with starting pitcher Dylan Cease, who is set to test free agency in just a couple of months.
Dylan Cease is predicted to sign with the Atlanta Braves in free agency.
The Atlanta Braves’ season is over, and this Winter will be a huge opportunity to sign some players that can help stabilize and bolster their roster. Should the Braves consider signing Dylan Cease?
According to Bleacher Report, the strikeout artist Cease is predicted to leave San Diego and sign with the Atlanta Braves:
“All are potential playoff contenders next season but with pressure on the Rangers, Orioles, and Braves to get back to competing for a World Series, expect those three to approach any potential negotiations more aggressively. The Braves, out of the playoffs in consecutive seasons, feel like the best potential landing spot for a team that needs more depth in the starting rotation to go along with Spencer Strider. Of course, sticking with the Padres is also an option.”
“Prediction: Cease signs with Atlanta on a $160 million deal, just north of his projected market value, according to Spotrac.”
$160 million is a pretty high evaluation for a guy who had north of a 4.50 ERA over 32 starts this season, but if he can command the strike zone and keep the ball in the park, Cease can be as dominant as anyone. He also notched 215 strikeouts in 168 innings.
The playoffs may also help the free agent case if he’s able to show those dominating traits and keep hitters off balance.
Cease is a market-setting guy. Based on when he signs and who he signs with, it will be a good marker for where the right-handed starting pitcher market is at.
